Thrifty Thursday - Plant Cuttings & Cheap Storage...

No - this post is not about storing plant cuttings.
But we'll get to plants in a moment.
First - here's a cheap storage idea.
I made a little bin for storing my greeting cards.

I had this 1/2 peck box from a summer purchase so I decided to
put it to use.   I started with a coat or 2 of paint.
Then added some card stock to cover those finger holes.

Now my cards all fit in there nicely - and I'm good to go until
such time as I find something 'better'.

Now onto the plants.
At the end of summer I saved some cuttings from my coleus.
I simply cut off some tops - and placed them in water.

Over the course of weeks - the bottoms develop roots...
Source
Finally - I have gotten around to potting them
(2 different coleus that I potted in 1 planter)...

I'll probably root some more cuttings from these yet.
The goal is for free plants for my outside containers next summer.

And on another note - I'm switching over to my 2017 planner today.
Last year I purchased a pricier one - the Perfect Planner I called it.  And it was.  But was also a bit more than I personally need.
I found I make my lists other places.
So this year - I went a cheaper route...
I found it  'in store' here

I admit - I was swayed by that pretty cover.
Each open page is simply a week of blank days.  And there is
also space for lots of notes in the book of the planner.
And there's not much more to it.

Will it be enough?  Guess we'll see.
And that's almost 3 Thrifty Tips for you today!  ~Joyce

Too Much Spinach? Freeze It....

A recent grocery store purchase for me was this huge box of organic spinach -
for $1.99.  It was almost the only 'greens' option to I bought it.
(I shop a discount grocery store and have to take what is available on that day.)

But this is too much for just the 2 of us.
Thankfully, I stumbled upon the idea that I could freeze some of it.

So the 'extra' got a good washing...

Then a quick 20 second or so dip in boiling water
(to blanch it and keep it from discoloring)...

Then another quick dip - this time in cold water...

Then drained.

All ready for the freezer and future recipes...

And a fringe benefit - that big plastic container is
helping to organize my under sink detergents.
Yes, it was that big!
Always thrifty!

Shutter Project...

Slowly, very slowly, we are getting things done
in our office.   (We've been working on a redo
for several months.)  Today, My Love hung one
of the shutters we have planned for this space.
This shutter is my new display rack for some
of the vintage clothing that I sell.

It's still missing a hook or two (I need to find at
least one more) and a few other adornments -
but mostly - it is finished.
 I'm liking the mismatched hooks...
...and a few other metal pieces just for fun.
These wall hooks are gonna get a lot
of use!

My Gluten Free Cookbook...

This post is lining right up with today's
Photo A Day theme - 'blue'.  Many  years ago
I started gathering recipes and writing them in
this little notebook.  These are all gluten free-naturally recipes that I will send with my daughter when she has a home of  her own.
Hopefully it will be a quick reference for her
when she's preparing meals for herself (Celiac)
and/or her family.  Since she is now out of her
teens - I'd better get cracking with filling up
this little book!
I plan to make this recipe this weekend.
We're having another couple for a belated
Valentine's Day meal.  It's a tasty, easy recipe
and presents well!

Crates and Wooden Boxes...

I have several old wooden boxes that I use for
storage or side tables throughout our home.
These 2 stack together to store CD's and
magazines. They make a nice plant stand too...

 Gotta love the old graphics...

Gift Wrap Storage...

As I'm working on moving lots of 'stuff' into
our new office space - it's apparent that some
of my gift wrap supplies will no longer fit.
Enter my Solution...
Right next door in the living room rests this
old chest 'coffee table' which holds nothing of importance (BTW - it was a $5 yard sale find)...
It's the perfect size to store my rolls of gift wrap.   They're out of sight and still accessible.

Inventory Shelf (Office Redo)...

Found me an old shelf unit in my garage that
looked awful.  After several coats of $1
garage sale paint - I love it!  It's my new shelf
for antique inventory in our office redo...
See that lovely aqua Butterprint Pyrex
casserole?  Found it on a free pile this week
in perfect condition!
The new 'oops painted' walls just happen to
go with the existing curtains I made from a
bedspread years ago.  Gotta love that!
Also loving my recent $1.50 basket purchase
for sheet music and larger pictures & paper...
What fun I'm having finally getting organized!
